A new poll from the Trades Union Congress has found that half of UK adults worry artificial intelligence will take or alter their job. For younger workers aged 25 to 34, that figure rises to nearly two-thirds. These are real, understandable concerns. AI is fast-moving, capable of reshaping established routines, and critically, still new.
But the answer isn’t to bury our heads in the sand. In fact, the real risk lies in ignoring AI. This is a short but critical window of opportunity: those who act now will be better prepared, more competitive, and more resilient in the years ahead.
What staff can do right now
The biggest career risk today isn’t AI itself, it’s failing to learn how to use AI to be better at your job. The good news is you don’t need to master the theory. Instead:
- Start small. Just get going, fail fast, and learn as you go. You’ll build skills far quicker than trying to study every AI concept in detail.
- Think ahead. Future job interviews and internal promotion conversations are likely to include questions about AI usage.
- Communicate clearly. AI is only as good as the instructions you give it. The best results come when you combine clear direction ("I want you to X for Y reason") with relevant context ("This attached file Z will help because...").
- Refine prompts. If AI isn’t giving you what you want, ask it: “Ask me three simple questions to better understand my needs.”
What businesses need to do
Leaders can’t leave AI adoption up to chance. Staff are already experimenting, often through free accounts that pose risks around data security. To stay competitive, organisations should:
- Create an open culture. Encourage curiosity, experimentation, and conversation around AI tools.
- Lay the groundwork. Equip teams with structured support and guidelines for AI use.
- Provide secure tools. Set up a professional AI workspace through a paid account (ChatGPT Business, Gemini, or Claude Pro). These offer better data security, prevent model training, and provide a far more effective environment than free tools.
